Barclays Bank
Which all means that when I went into the bank in the middle of yesterday morning - not a traditionally busy time - the queues were stretching out of the door. Dozens of ex-Woolwich customers plus the usual Barclays bunch waited for what is frankly too long.
A "welcomer" prowled the queue, trying to persuade people to use the automated services, but after reading articles in the local paper a week or so ago about people depositing cash and the bank (can't remember which, frankly I don't care) saying they 'never got it,' I for one will only use the autimatic deposit for cheques, never cash. Other people needed foreign money, awkward transactions or just wanted to talk to a human about their finances - though of course they had to bellow across the counter in front of half of Westcombe Park.
Barclays have recently had a branch spruce-up - presumably in anticipation of all the unwilling new customers (there were a lot of grumbles in the queue about being forced to become part of Barclays, and the 'comments book' made an interesting read) but until they start opening a few more counters I can't see that a new paint job is going to make any difference to the amount of time we have to stand looking at it.
So. Who out there is looking forward to getting direct charges for this kind of 'service?'

f you're feeling energetic you could traipse to Lewisham branch. I gave up on Barclays a year ago after 15 years of apathy. Switched to SMILE and make deposits at my local PO or occasionally venture to the COOP in Lewisham.
Yeah - but that's the whole thing - not everyone does 'feel energetic' - I know it's easy to bang on about the elderly or the infirm but it is a point - and even younger or more able people also have busy lives that just don't give them the time to traipse over to Lewisham/. These banks are supposed to offer a SERVICE - and that's what they'll be charging through the nose for very very soon (yes - I know they charge already but it is at least indirect just now.)
I am seriously considering internet banking - but I haven't found one I like the look of any more than any other yet. The Co-op made it so hard to switch to that I gave up and the others all have their various hoops to jump through. It's all very depressing.
Depressing, indeed - I know what you mean I got quite frustrated making the switch. Banks make it virtually impossible for a person to open a new account; all done in the name of fraud and money laundering prevention. Once I managed to open my SMILE account I found the whole banking process a lot easier. Banks depend on customer apathy added with the rigorous procedures to open a new account, it takes its toll on your sanity
Does anyone know whether anything is planned for the former Woolwich branch at the Standard ?
Well - if we're REALLY lucky the same company who are turning the ex-Woolwich on Trafalgar Rd into an amusement arcade might take a fancy to that one too...
Eeeh, I remember when there was a NatWest *and* a Barclays in East Greenwich, as well as the Woolwich.
You should try the Halifax in Lewisham for rotten-ness - I have to go there once a year and it needs a whole morning...
I have been in the UK for 9 years and have been to a bank only twice.
Why do people need to use branches?
