Charlton Lido
I was wondering if you or any of your readers knew what its like atCharlton Lido. I notice it opens at the end of July, and wonderedwhether it was worth a visit or not.

I've not been down there yet, but I bet either Charlton Average or Inspector Sands will know. Anyone got any inside knowledge on this? Frankly my back garden's been my own private Greenwich Lido in the past week or so...

Haven't actually been in but I hear it is fabulous. It's a 50m pool - pretty rare although not as long as Tooting Bec! - and should be worth a visit. Check it out on the London Pools Campaign website (there is a link to a video too) http://www.londonpoolscampaign.com/charltonmovie2004
There is a club that uses it every day throughout the year, it's just a shame it's only open to the public for a very short summer season.
Right-ho I am determined to get down there at some stage then!
Just time your visit carefully if you are allergic to kids!
Nope, I was blank on the subject....
I've done a small post on the subject but all I've really added is a correct map as one I found on an official site is wrong.
it's great, although it does swarm with kids during the holidays [July 19th onwards in case you didn't know].Last summer I found that turning up about 4pm was good as it thinned out a lot for the last hour or so. Changing cubicles were a bit shabby - not as nice as Crook Log Leisure Centre, or Peckham Pulse - but you can't beat it when the sun is out.
Only been there once - it's RAMMED full of kids and families, and feels like it should be intimidating but actually isn't. It desperately needs a bit of TLC in parts, though - those changing rooms feel like converted toilets.
I did swim here a few years ago and found a very welcoming early morning crowd of dedicated swimmers. Swam a little bit more than I was used to in an unheated pool (ex-triathlete) and did find it hard to get my body temperature back to normal even in September. Very glad I believe they survived an asbestos overhaul and are back and pushing on again. Lidos in London are under threat and there was a campaign to save them.
