Marcet Books

Sad news, Folks.

Martin Kemp at the delightful Marcet Books has finally decided he's had enough. His health has been not so good recently and what with the well-documented rent rises in the covered market, he's decided to give up and retire.

He's currently selling all his stock at half price - good news in the short-term, very bad news in the long term. For such a minute bookstore there are vast amounts of fascinating volumes and he reckons he has plenty more downstairs.

It will take a couple of weeks for him to go (I assumed months when he told me, but no - he's expecting to go within weeks.) I can't imagine that little alley off Turnpin Lane without it. Add that to the demise of Essential Music, and the fact that Greenwich Inc now control three of the four corners of the place, and there is not much to be cheerful about in Greenwich Market just now.

Good evening!

I am quite sorry not to be informed, but what is exactly "Greenwich Inc"? and what is the matter with that?

Thank you for your understanding!

Hi Emeline

Greenwich Inc is a local chain which seems to be taking over Greenwich. It's not a bad thing in itself, I guess, but it's strangling all the other restaurants and becoming a bit of a monster.

Greenwich Inc certainly is a bit of a monster, beleive me. Also, they've actually got all four corners of the market - The Admiral Hardy, Inc (formerly the wonderful Time Bar), The Coach and Horses, and Powder Monkey (formerly The Cricketers).

Haven't Essential Music been threatening their demise for some time, now?

That's true, but I suspect they're just seeing out their lease. The guy told me that he had hoped to extend it, but that the rents were so high it was very unlikely. He's considering starting a card shop, which could be very interesting.

Sorry to hear this, altho it was obvious that the business was getting him down. I wonder at what point we'll be able to do something to keep (what's left of) the diversity that makes Greenwich what it is.

Whatever it is, we'd better do it soon, or we face a future of Tie Rack, Body Shop and Baby Gap...
