The First Act To Play The Dome

Charlton Average asks:

I'm trying to find out who were the first band to play at the O2.
The Greenwich Times makes it sound like it was that choir of school
children and the Sun's trying to say that it was Tom Jones and/or the
Kaiser Chiefs.

The full details are here:

play-o2-arena.html

Do you have any idea who that first band were? If not could you try
and find out? I suspect they were a local band and I really think that they deserve
the credit for doing it.

The Phantom Replies:

Hi CA,

Sadly for some reason I can't log onto your blog at the moment - I'll try again later.

I suspect that it depends on what your point of view is as to who actually played first. According to the delivery guy I met last week who was telling me about his new security job at the Dome, there was a private party hosted by one of the banks the Sunday before the public opening (I think it was a Sunday) and presumably that was when these big acts were playing, for the Z-list celebrities and pissed bank employees (my delivery guy reckons he "saw some sights" - whatever that means...) The first PUBLIC outing would have been, I assume, the kiddies on Wednesday.

That would be my guess, anyway. Anyone else got an imput here who has more than the word of a delivery guy to go on?

Tom Jones and The Kaiser Chiefs seem to have played there on the Saturday (the 23rd) before Bon Jovi, so it was after the public preview. I'm thinking it was that that your security guy was talking about, many would consider the 24th (with the street performers and Bon Jovi) as being the proper public opening.

I'd also heard mention elsewhere that the workers party was happening on that Saturday.

The school children's choir were not the first to play on the 20th of June.

Looking at the times of my photos I can see that I took my seat at about 7pm.

The first band I'm talking about were playing at 7.15pm.

The lights were still up at 7.30pm

The choir were performing at 7.50pm.

So it's the name of that first band I'm after, I think they played about 4 songs and I think all of them were covers. I also remember them doing James' Sit Down.

No - I was talking to my delivery guy on the 19th - the day before the resident's preview - I remember because I said I'd look out for him and say hello - no chance, given the number of people there. I'm talking about Sunday 17th...

The plot thickens. I'll just have to order something else and hope my delivery guy still works for the company!

Very mysterious....

Hopefully someone out there can tell us some more about either the mystery band that played first on the 20th or about this party that came before that.

Surely someone knows something?

Do you think part of the induction ceremony was that all the staff signed some sort of AEG official secrets waiver?

There was a private party for, I think Lloyds, on Sunday 17th as some of the equipment was still there on Monday whilst we were being shown round. Big screen outside with staff names on it. I guess you could call Lloyds HO and ask them if there was a band.

Wasn't the band that played Lucky Soul - the guy from The Last Bus Home knows them well.

Incidentally I got my email to enter the draw for Die Hard 4.0 screening on Friday today!

There's a draw? I was told 'first come, first served!' They really do need to get their information act together, don't they...

Lucky Soul did play that night, they were on after the choir.

To the best of our knowledge that makes them the third group to play the O2 Arena.

However if that Lloyds party had a band on in the Arena then it all might change.....
