Westcome Park Police Station Car Park
Greenwich Mutiny asks:
Is there any truth in the council increasing the rent by 50% on the scrap of land that acts as a staff carpark for the Royal Hill constabulary? Rumour has it that the hike in price is an attempt to force the police out and flog the land to property developers to build more housing/luxury flats???
You know - I have no idea. I had always assumed that the land was owned by the police themselves, who have actually said they're moving anyway (you'll find it somewhere in the archives here - try under 'news.' Must sort those archives out...)
This sounds a bit like a Chinese whisper to me. I haven't heard any rumours about this - has anyone else? If so, where?
I have no doubt that luxury flats will be built on that piece of land (though just how 'luxury' flats with a direct view over the 102(M) can be remains to be seen - maybe they'll be the Section 106 affordables for the flats in the old police station.) But I'm not convinced about this rumour. If the council do own the land, perhaps they've put up the prices for the usual reason - profit. Somehow I doubt they'd have got themselves together enough to conspire such a small thing for such a small profit. Nah. I don't believe that one...
Prove me wrong, someone.

I would be delighted if this rumour turns out to be baseless. Chatting to one of the local businesses, they thought the rent hike was an attempt to force the police out and develop the land.....
You know the more I think about it, the less likely it sounds. Let's face it - the police have already said they're going...
Well I'm slightly confused as the Police station on Royal Hill/Burney Street is not the same as the Westcombe Park police station. To my knowledge the police station on Royal/Burney Street ain't going anywhere any time soon phantom :-)
OOops - sorry - my mistake - of course - they're nothing to do with each other. I don't know anything at all about the Royal Hill one. It always looks very sad and neglected when I see it, but know nothing abou twho owns any land. I had Westcombe Park Police Station in my stupid head....
The land at the back of Westcombe Park police station contained two houses until the mid-80s, cut off from when it was Farmdale Road and the A102 was built down the middle. So it probably is council land, and we all know what the council likes to do with its land.
The land in Royal Hill where the police park up is a filled-in railway line. FACT!
Oh so not advisable to build on the land on Royal Hill then ;-)
Tee hee - I'd like to see them try to build on that then...
