Weddings
Jemma asks:
I've lived in Greenwich for 3 years, having previously lived in Eltham for 8 years. I wouldn't want to move anywhere else! My boyfriend moved his home and his job from Surrey last year and he loves it too.
We are getting married this summer and want it to be in Greenwich. We'd like a civil ceremony at Rangers House but really can't afford the venue hire (£ 4k) to hire it for the evening so we're thinking of hiring the orangery at the fan museum for a lunch instead. What do you think of the fan museum for a reception? Any help would be appreciated!
I think the Fan Museum would be a fabulous venue for a wedding - I didn't know they did them, but it would be wonderful - elegant and unusual. Presumably you don't have a massive guest list as the place isn't that large (I would also find out in advance when the roadworks are likely to end - the photographs would be a bit duff with massive holes in the road...)
I have no idea what their catering is like - but maybe you have outside caterers in mind?
The Trafalgar Tavern is a lovely place for a reception, but the prices have taken a serious hike in recent years, and if Rangers House is out of the question, then I suspect that The Trafalgar will be too. Ditto Eltham Palace, which I am sure you have already considered.
There are several lovely venues within the Old Royal Naval College - not just the Painted Hall or the Chapel. Ask them about the Admiral's House - or even, if you're after 'quirky,' the skittle alley.

The Queen's House would be another elegant solution for a larger party. Again I have no idea of prices. I don't know whether the garden at the Old Royal Observatory is available but if it isn't the Octagon Room may be.

I once went to a wedding at the Cutty Sark. It was wonderful, though the peripatetic trad jazz band ran into problems with the low ceilings - the sousaphone player had to sit down. I don't think, with all the tent-y stuff there is round it just now, that it's available (or desirable) at the moment, but when it gets its glass roof, it will be fabulous.
If you want to be REALLY far out, you could always do what some friends of mine did - a pagan handfasting ceremony at the stone circle in Hilly Fields. That's free - but be prepared to have small boys on bicycles riding past sniggering at robe-clad guests invocating the spirits (sky-clad not allowed on a Saturday afternoon...)
Second thoughts, you're probably best off with the Orangery.
Anyone else got any more suggestions for elegant, moving locations for Jemma's wedding? Let us know what you choose, Jemma - we'll come along and throw some rice...

Oh - and don't forget Manchester's Flowers!!
We got married two years ago at the Hamilton House Hotel in Blackheath, sadly now converted back to a private residence.
I hear Charlton House is lovely, we tried to go and see it but they restrict viewings - it may have changed now though.
We did consider getting married in Eltham Palace - too expensive & too many rules, we also wanted Goddard's Pie House!
I would advise you to go with your heart and don't be straitjacketed into choosing somwhere conventional. We saw a lovely wedding in the bandstand at the top of Greenwich Park, all the guests on deckchairs on the grass, a three-piece band playing. Glorious.
I can also recommend a florist, where to get wedding rings, dressmaker, photographer - you name it!
Greenwich Foot Tunnel?
Or what about Woolwich ferry? Oliver's would be wonderfully louche...
I'll get me coat...
I got married at the Trafalgar two years ago and I loved every second of it! It was 1800 on a Saturday in July but their prices are so much cheaper on days other than a Saturday.
I agree with Loulou - Charlton House is a great venue and excellent value (you can bring your own booze - what a saving!)
The Mitre Pub does receptions too.
Sorry this is cheeky (and Greenwich Phantom please remeove if this is wrong) but we have just created a website where people can buy your honeymoon for you as your wedding gift (something you might like if you've lived together for a while).

Charlton House - what a great idea!
Shelly - what's your website address?
Hi Phantom!
It's www.buy-our-honeymoon.com
We are two doors down from Paul McPherson's Gallery.
It's an intriguing idea. I confess I find the whole wedding-list thing total anathema - but many people regard it as essential, and this is certainly a different take on it...
Well done for finding a gap in the market!
Check it out, all you lovebirds!
We had a great wedding on a budget: the trick is to avoid the "W" word if at all possible.
Charlton House is a fantastic venue - we got hitched in the long gallery. It was fantastic value and a beautiful Jacobean interior. We were even allowed to give out champagne as guests arrived... a good start! Double decker buses then took our guests to the Coach and Horses in the market (before it got taken over). I'm sure many landlords might consider this if you guarantee a certain spend at the bar...
(Wedding cake - the white forest gateau from Patisserie Valerie in Soho looks great and v wedding-cakeish... but much cheaper
if you order it in three tiers and tell them it's for a party!Cake stand can be hired from a catering suppliers.)
All in all it cost us about £6,000 for 120+ guests. Expensive for a party, but peanuts for a you-know-what...
another cheeky one - a friend of mine is a florist who is about to do a wedding in the Painted Hall in the Old Naval College. She's very very good (did mine too) and everything she produces is done on a sustainable basis. Her website is www.catkinflowers.co.uk.
To Shelley Green,
Gawd, where were you eight years ago? We were ringing travel agents left and right trying to get a deal whereby people could contribute to our honeymoon. No one had ever heard of idea (surely I'd seen it in a magazine somewhere...) but they seemed to think we were crazy and/or rude for suggesting it.
I wish you lots of success with your honeymoon business!
That's really sweet of you. Thank you so much!
Shelley
I had a significant birthday at the Fan Museum 4 years ago. We had a wonderful time, there are restrictions on which caterers can be used (I used Hand-Made Foods - again excellent). We had to be out of the building by 11pm due to it being in a residential area and there were restrictions about loud music in the lovely rear garden which we decorated with tea lights. Do check on the arrangements for providing own drinks as there was an unexpected additional charge for this.
Dear Loulou,
I am really interested in using the bandstand for our ceremony - do you recall when you saw the wedding and do you have any ideas as to how we may be able to contact the wedding party - I have rung royal parks and they keep telling me that they don't allow weddings in the park and so can't use the bandstand...help!
Hi Anonymous
Can you really get away with hiring Charlton House - in our case for a reception- without mentioning it's for a Wedding reception?
Kitty
Hmm - I guess it depends on how much the Right Hand talkes to the Left Hand and that is something we can't really know. I was at Chatham Dockyards this weekend and noticed that the very lovely Commissioner's House and garden are used for weddings. Worth a look?
