Jet Garage (for Naomi)

Naomi asks:

I live in Westcombe Park and am intrigued to know what is going to happen on the site of the old Jet Petrol Station on Woolwich road, opposite the bottom of Halstow Road? Thought you would know!

Hi Naomi - yes - we were discussing this the other day - it's an intriguing prospect isn't it. I asked the guys who were clearing out the remains of the garage shop into their van the day it closed and they told me that it will be - surprise, surprise, luxury flats. Quite when that will happen is anyone's guess. In the meanwhile it has become an urban playground for small boys with bicycles...

And what luxury, eh.

On a very major, busy polluted road next to a bus stop with the roar of the A102(M) overhead, and a toxic wasteland courtesy to its former commercial use and the disused bus depot next door. All at densities (on the original plans as submitted to Council in 2003, anyway) at 625 habital rooms per hectare. For those who aren't close to these things, that's approximately double the recommended building density.

I'd be a fool to underestimate the desperation of those keen to get on the property ladder, but this looks like a thoroughly ill-conceived venture.

P.S. aren't the new flats going up opposite the entrance to Chevening road butt-ugly?

P.P.S. has anyone ever met anyone who lives in the Durkan building on Annandale/Woolwich Road/Calvert? Gotta hate gated communities...

Yes - the new flats are like a bunch of portacabins stacked on top of each other - but that's not stopping the developers charging ridiculous amouts for them.

There has been someone on this blog who bought in the gated community and reckons they made 50,000 in six months. I guess that was my point - it's all very well to buy a place then move on in six months pocketing fifty grand, but it doesn't make for much of a community spirit. I truly hope that whatever goes in the Old Hospital Site isn't gated, but allows the community to get together and interact. That's the way to get shops, services and life to flourish.
