Prime Time Video
I was wondering if anyone knew what happened to the Prime Time video shop next to Somerfields, I walked past yesterday to find that it has shut down! Does anyone know if they are going to re-open or whether another one will take it's place? Failing that, what's the closest one now for us in west Greenwich???
High Street video stores seem to be having a hard time of it recently and I've been noticing several closing down. I think it's probably down to the mail-order rental that's enjoying a vogue. I've been testing out a few myself recently. They all seem to be much of a muchness, though LoveFilm will charge you for an extra month if you cancel and then your film doesn't reach them by the cancellation date (they recommend that you send your vids back by registered post if you cancel, which seems a bit dodgy to me.)
I confess I don't know of another video hire shop in West Greenwich (though if there is one, someone here will know it) but I can heartily recommend the Blockbuster on Trafalgar Road, if not for the selection (which is at best average) for the excellent service you get there. All the staff are friendly, helpful and accommodating. I know it's a bit of a long way. Maybe someone else knows of somewhere closer.

I'm afraid its gone for good - I was with a friend returning their DVD and the assistant said they were shutting up shop. I will interested to see what next springs up in that location.
It's a shame to see them go. I have tried a few of the online places and they are all pretty awful, with Love Film being the worst offender in my books. About the best one (in terms of sending you DVDs close to the top of your list) is mymoviestream.com but I even gave up on them eventually. In the end, it was far better to just nip down the road when you wanted a film... no more.
In my little fantasy parallel universe that is UberGreenwich, the guys that work in Blockbuster strike out on their own and start stocking really interesting indie stuff as well as the mainstream material. I agree it's always better to go down the road on the day - instead of having to guess a few days in advance what your mood will be. At the moment we're on Blockbuster's online store trial and it's ok - but sometimes we get, for example, an action picture when what I really fancy that evening is a nice French art movie and vice versa.
Maybe I'm just being picky. But I can't imagine that it will replace actually going into a shop. On each of the trials, just for fun, we've picked one of the movies they suggest (or their computer suggests)based on our rentals. Only one actually came up with anything that was even remotely similar to other stuff we've rented, whereas the guys in Blockbuster often hit the mark.
I've noticed that even in the past couple of months Blockbuster on Trafalgar Rd has started upping the games and downing the actual movies. The service is still sterling, but the choice gets ever smaller.
What's a phantom to do? I must get out more...
Myself and the Deptford Duke are distressed to hear that. We don't really have any interest in the online/mailing services - for the reasons mentioned. And we have been using Prime Time for years, even since moving to Deptford, because it has such a great range.
Incidentally Phantom, how do you find time to watch films as well? I guess if you're a phantom you don't need sleep...
Tee hee. I watch them through other people's walls as I'm out haunting...
It's currently selling its stock - DVDs from £2.99. Sat and Sun only.
A bargain...but for all the wrong reasons.
