Westcombe Park Police Station
I've been reading in The Papers that all the police stations in the area are to close with a new Super Police Station opening somewhere central. Is there anyone who didn't see that one coming a mile off?
Presumably they've been having a look at the estate agents prices and realising what a gold mine they're sitting on. Plumstead? Not bad. The centre of Woolwich? Really rather good. Westcombe Park Police Station in Combedale Rd? PAYDIRRRRRT!!!!!!
In the same papers, I notice a very average-looking four-bed property in Combedale Road going for a whopping £ 650,000 - what would a converted cute ol' ex-police station turned into a million luxury flats be worth? And there's acres of parking behind that they could build a few more on too. They could even convert the look-out tower into a penthouse.
I guess ultimately I am hardly surprised. Since the advent of stupid house prices, and given that developers will even build on a strip of land in Ormiston Rd hardly big enough to be a garden, I've been taking bets on how long the Westcombe Park station would last.
We're just not going to be able to live in Dixon of Dock Green-wich for much longer and I guess we have to get used to it.
I just hope they keep the rather nice building and that wonderful blue lamp outside (and the sweet little cherry tree would be a welcome retention too... )
Perlease, Mr Developer? Pretty perlease?

Yep, methinks you are probably right. On my journey home I noticed they are ripping down the flats behind the allotments at Maze Hill. Not that they were stunningly beautiful but I imagine another luxury development winging its way to Maze Hill. I'm surprised they have let the allotments stay - 'stunning loft apartments with views of Ted pulling up his onions' doesn't have a ring to it does it?
Having lived, erm, rather close to there for a couple of decades...
1) It generally just serves as an operational base for the police.
2) At least until the late 90s the cells were still in use, and they may well be now. A few high-profile remand prisoners have been secreted away there since it's a little out of the way.
It was better when it was a proper nick, though.
oh, and it's only a couple of storeys high, and the police stations that have gone for development (Lee, Ladywell, Shooters Hill) are taller buildings.
Still, the view I had of the police station then is better than the view I have where I am now ;-)
There's a lovely little police call phone just outside the door that reminds me of the TARDIS. Make that the entrance phone and I might have to consider buying one of the flats!
Tee hee - I know what you mean Andrew. If they kept the paraphenalia, I might just about bear it, its having been an obvious target for developers for sometime.
The Mercury artcile where I read it said that the polices were currently talking to developers, so it sounds a bit of a done-deal...
I really love it because it looks like a sleppy country police station rather than an outpost of the Met. I've never seen it open - certainly not for the public to go in. Maybe they do need a big centralised building, but I can't see that getting rid of little local stations is going to make response times any better. Personally I think it's an excuse to realise the cash.
