The Spanish Galleon

Katja asks:

Does somebody know what is going on with Spanish Galleon pub in the heart of Greenwich town centre? It has been closed for few days and there is clearly some building work going on, but haven't got a clue what's happening.

The Spanish Galleon is a Shepherd Neame pub, so unless it was doing stupendously bad business (unlikely) I doubt if it's gone for good, or that Our Frank has got his paws on it. My best guess is a refit before the tourist season is truly upon us. I confess I hadn't noticed its being shut - not been to the market in the past week or so due to vast numbers of visitors (not tourists, my own visitors, I mean...) I tried to call them but to no avail. I'll send them an email and ask. That often does the trick...

I also noticed the pub opposite Olivers - the name escapes me is also closed.

Yes - that's the Rose & Crown - another mystery. We are pretty sure it's not going to be a Greenwich Inc joint as a barman from Powder Monkey said that Our Frank wasn't interested - but apart from that it's a conundrum. Such as shame - it looks so forlorn.

Whoever's doing up the Spanish Galleon it's got to be a good thing... It had to be the worst pub in the centre of Greenwich by a long way. The atmosphere, the staff, the food, all incredibly bad.

...And taking up such a prominent place in the centre of town. Presumably it made its money from tourists. Hopefully a few locals will visit when it reopens.

It's not that bad - it's not a Frank the Yank joint for a start.

But it could do with an almighty kick up the arse, agreed.

I have a little news. I looked at the site specifics this evening and it seems that it IS closed for a refurb. The work mentions rebuilding the conservatory at the back and re-roofing. Presumably they're refurbing at the same time. To start with I thought they might be turning the upstairs into luxury flats but presumably that would require change of purpose permission and I've heard nothing about that.

More news as I get it.

It is getting a total refurb and should be open over the next week or so. Its been closed for about 3- 4 weeks. They are re-doing the conservatory to make it abit more open for the summer and turning upstairs into a area for more ffood so it doesnt get as packed on a saturday and sunday for food. Should be good when it re-opens

I've been in since the refurb, and it's actually now one of my favourite pubs. Spacious, smoke-free, lots of good ales on tap, and now good pub food. I had a burger and fat chips last Saturday and it was not only well cooked and juicy, but cheap as well. Far better than some of the dingier, rammed-to-bursting student haunts.

Yes - I went in last week, haven't got around to reviewing it yet, but agree more or less with your conclusions.
