Tutankhamun Exhibition

Am I the only one who's getting slightly cross with the papers at the moment? Have you seen all those headlines about curses and Pharaohs and Domes just because we're not getting the boy-king's golden mask at the forthcoming exhibition?

If the mask is too delicate to leave Egypt, as Dr Zahi Hawass says - or even if the Egyptians choose to keep the mask for frankly understandably touristic reasons, it's NOTHING TO DO WITH THE DOME.

It didn't go to Philadelphia and we ALWAYS KNEW it wouldn't be coming here - so what's the big deal with all the headlines this week? We've got everything else - now that we're not getting the casino - and I personally can't wait to see the treasures which I didn't get to see the first time round because I was 'too young' and my parents thought I'd want the toilet just as they got to the front of the mile-long queue.

Which is why I thought I'd share a link I've just discovered on the 02 (God I hate typing that name) website where you can register your interest in up to 8 tickets for the exhibition. You don't have to say what day you want to go - or even part with any cash up front, but you will get a unique registration number which will guarantee you get tickets. Given that it's almost certainly going to sell out, in my book it's worth signing up even if you don't know if you're going yet. I note they're being somewhat coy about how much the tickets will actually cost...

The cost is the issue. The DO2me is simply proving an astronomically expensive venue. £15 to see Tut's treasures without that mask? And £25/£45/£65 to see the NHL when it comes to London? Give me a break!

Also because bookings seem to be possible only through Ticketmaster, you can add another 20-25% per ticket to the face value before you've started.

I guess they can just pick a figure and people will pay it. The ticketmaster thing is a true rip-off. I wonder whether when the Dome (Sorry - just can't actually say the other word) opens there will be a box office where you can buy face-value tickets like the West End theatres. We can only hope.

Well, what do you pay to see a top line football match/ Wimbledon/Formula One ticket at the moment? I bet that they are just as expensive, and most of them are booked through ticketmaster as well. And they don't have the comfy seats The O2 are promising........

I'm told there will be a box office but don't know what sort of prices it will have!

Can you not get tickets without a hotel room? Surely not. Maybe, htough, you just think that the prices they're charging the hotel room should be included...

I saw it in Cairo museum about a month ago, it is awesome, interestingly it's quite damaged, especially around the back, which you never see in the tourist pix. Of course, we were rushed round the museum, the guide was good but, they don't make much money so they shoved us through, we'll be going to the Greenwich exhibition to make up for it. Go to Egypt if you get a chance, but make sure you go in the winter, it was ridiculously hot even in April (145F in the Valley) and I am still recovering. the guide discouraged us from going into Tut's tomb, I have no idea why, but I went in, gotta be done. They all hate Hawass too, by the way.

Thanks Magpie - you've made me all the more determined to see it. I have been watching Hawass for sometime now - only on documentary and news programmes, sadly - never actually got to meet him or anyone who knows him - and I can see why he might be unpoular. He's certainly a showman - and he's shrewd. He knows exactly what he's doing, what buttons he can press to get what he wants and the best way to show himself to the world. But from a distance at least, perhaps that's what treasures like this need. I have no doubt that he's not a popular man, but some jobs don't invite popularity, they demand politicians. I guess what we have to ask is "is he doing the right thing for Egypt?" It's a tough shout - the whole world wants a piece of Egypt's treasures - and that includes not a few nutcases.

No doubt he'll be over in November and we'll be able to see this smooth operator up close. I wait with interest...

You can always get yourself a King Tut mask t-shirt. They have some nice ones here.
