Supermarkets

Pablo asks:

From previous posts I have deduced the following:1) The Co-op has been refurbished and will continue totrade2) A new Tesco supermarket is soon to appear3) There is a Somerfield in the areaPlease excuse my ignorance (I am very new to the area)however I have the following questions:1) Where will the new Tesco be and what is thetimeline for this?2) Where is the Somerfield? Is this due for closure orwill it continue to do business?

The new Tesco will be along Trafalgar Road, a few metres closer into Greenwich than the Co-op. I have no idea how long this is going to take - but since they haven't actually finished the foundations yet I wouldn't hold my breath just yet.

Somerfield is in Greenwich High Road in that dodgy little set-back row of shops. It's a dismal, scruffy experience.

A new M&S opens at Blackheath Standard today.

Firstly: Greenwich and Blackheath have some (not many, but some) interesting and good quality independent food shops. Try to use them sometimes alongside your main supermarket shop.
Secondly: The main big supermarket in Greenwich is the Sainsbury's in the retail park near the Blackwall Approach. I'm no big fan of it, but if we're talking supermarkets then it should get a mention.
Thirdly: We're supposed to be getting a Waitrose eventually, or rather Deptford is. Doing a search for details revealed this site, which looks rather interesting: http://www.derelictlondon.com/id13.htm

Good point Methers. Sometimes we forget the most obvious ones. The 'Tellytubby' Sainsburys is reasonably pleasant as they go. There's a Chinese supermarket See Woo very close to it in Horn Lane which is WELL worth a visit too - but I'd avoid Asda in the next retail park unless you want to meet the grumpiest people in Christendom...(the punters, that is - the staff are actually quite pleasant...)

Methers - I just checked out the website - it's excellent, isn't it - though just a little depressing...

Great website! What is the story with the Tescos in Trafalgar Road or the Waitrose?

Also, would Tesco/Sainsbury's do home delivery of items bought in the shop (as opposed to interweb orders)?

Many thanks!

Andreas

Do you mean the Co-Op and the Giant Scoffolding of Doom? We don't have a Waitrose, but the Tesco is - well - a Tesco - not wildly good but you get what you expect.

As for the Co-Op - I have been asked this one last week - and I'm currently trying to find out.

I don't know of any delivery services - but then I've never asked!

Many thanks. To prove I am not just scrounging info, I just went to Waitrose.com, and the Canary Wharf branch does delivery to SE10 if you don't fancy carrying your bags home. UKP3 if you shop for over 50.

Best

Andreas
