Hairdressers
"I have been going to Go West at the standard for some time and it is fine but my hair is not sensational. Is there any other good hairdressers you could recommend, that don't cost the earth but do a great job. Would appreciate a quick answer, need to get it cut this weekend/Monday if poss"
You would think that with the plethora of hairdressers around - a infinite number on Trafalgar and Woolwich roads for a start - that there would be somewhere that stands out but I haven't heard much about any of them - most people just say, like yourself, "it's ok."
I have heard good reports of Bavardez in Trafalgar Road, but haven't been myself - so can only report hearsay.
I confess that I actually travel some distance to a friend who does mine, which I know doesn't help you. But I know that people out there will have their own opinions.
So, guys. Any chop shops we should be earmarking - or avoiding?

Do yourself a favour and avoid The Greenwich Clipper. The staff themselves are fine, but the odd one looks like they need a wash and there are some that smoke so much that you may as well have a fag yourself. The shop is foul though, I went at 9.30 in the morning and the amount of hair on the floor must have been from the day before, great piles of it. The place is just plain dirty, dirty floors, dirty walls, dirty and ripped chairs, dirty towels. I went to suss out having my hair done for my wedding. The cut was basic and uninspiring too and at the till I was told I had a 25% off discount as a new customer but only actually received 12% off so they can't count either. I'm not the only one to have this experience as I was warned about this place by a couple of friends but it was on top of my wedding venue so worth a try. I cannot understand how this place with such a location can be so awful, it's not cheap either of course.... makes my skin crawl just to think of it.

I was looking into Bavardez just yesterday, have always wondered what it's like cut wise. Ego on Trafalgar Road is known for it's somewhat 'eccentric' styles. Put it this way, if you're a girl and don't want an uber mullet, don't go there. Several friends that have been always seem to get the cack handed trainee too.
For blokes, my mate swears by the old school gents barber next to Othello's steak house, Trafalgar Road. A good, no frills cut for a few quid.
I find Yvette at Ego to be the only person on the planet capable of cutting my hair such that I don't look like a fourteen-year-old.
We have recently moved over to Bavardez after Modella closed. The Modella girls moved over there, too. I'd recommend Kay or Annie (colourist). There's a guy in there as well who did a decent job, but a bit pricey for stingey me. Next time I'll call ahead and get Kay.
Mr. Andrekabu also swears by the gents near Othello. The were kind and cut our baby's hair one day. Just honest cuts at good prices by really nice guys. I did feel awkward in there as a mum with babe, but I think it's great for guys.
Mr Andrekabu here, in person. The place for guys is definitely Emilio's. They're just so friendly and welcoming every time I go in there, which is pretty surprising as I tend to delay getting a haircut for as long as humanly possible because I'm cheap. They told me that they've been in business there for nearly 20 years.
Other choices for men, none of which I've actually tried:
Fan. Never been in there, never liked the look of it. I think it's unisex, which probably means you get the worst of both worlds, but I would be interested in hearing from someone who's actually tried them out.
Chris's barber shop - on Tunnel Approach or whatever that street is called. Probably the cheapest of them all, but it's never quite looked 'clean' enough for me to want to go in there. Again, perhaps unfair because it's on one of the grubbiest streets in Greenwich, thanks to all that through traffic.
That new place on Vanbrugh Hill. This one is in the base of the Plaza building, and opened recently. This has the major benefit of being open on Sundays - yay! But I was put off going in there because one night, walking past, I saw some guys sitting in there smoking in amongst great piles of hair. I'm sorry, but I have a real problem with smokers. It just made the place look really grubby. So no for me, for now. [Yeah, I know Old Mr Emilio smokes, but he always does so in the back room, away from his customers. I've never seen anyone smoking in the shop]
Try Lindsay at the Greenwich Clipper (senior stylist) is fantastic and worth the dosh. She actually listens to you and when you say only a trim, she does exactly that! refreshing indeed! Her cuts are always great and has been my hairdresser for over a year now.
I've heard good things about Bavardez, but I also agree about the Clipper - I went recently and nearly ended up with hair extensions! I only went in for a trim! They are very forceful and they don't seem to be able to cope with anything other than normal straight blonde hair!
I have used Lee at Crede's on Blackheath Hill for many yeers and always return there after trying elsewhere.
Many of my friends highly recommend Sweeney's on Royal Hill however prices are higher.
Have been going to Bavardez for years and happy to see that Kay from Modella (soon to be part of the Tesco store) has got a chair there now. If you just want your fringe trimmed, in between cuts, they are always happy to slot you in, generally with no charge. Good cuts, decent coffee and on a good day the music isn't bad either.
Bavardez all the way! Great value, great cut. Greenwich Clipper was the worst hair experience I've ever had. I was told I was too old for the colour I wanted (I'm 36) given a completely different cut to what I asked. The place was filthy, disgustinbg and filthy. The boiler was broken so my hair was washed in cold water. For which I was given no discount. If I had been feeling stronger I would have refused to pay. I can't beleive they are still in business.
That's utterly shocking, Anon! Cold water? Frankly I'd have walked out when I was told I was too old for a colour. Disgraceful.
Chris's on Blackwall Lane is legendary, although I've never had one of his cuts myself.
I walked out and refused to pay at The Greenwich Clipper. It's taken me a year to grow out the mistakes made. Avoid!!!
Is this the place that has laser hair removal parties? I can't think of anything less appealling.
I'm really surprised at all the comments about the Greenwich Clipper being bad - I've been going there for years and have never had anything less than excellent service and great haircuts and colour. Maria in particular is excellent, and always gives me a proper consultation beforehand. Having been to a million horrendous places in Bristol during my degree it was a relief to return to Greenwich to get a great haircut at last. I've never seen it looking anything but spotless, and though one Christmas the boiler did break, the staff were extremely apologetic and I received money off my colour.
greenwich clipper is discrace wot a dirty unhygenic salon i have ever been to no wonder why the are putting out half price vouchers out, wot are the doing looseing all there customers! the floors are discusting but i must say the people that work there are brilliant ive been going there for a few years now but the only thing that keeps me coming back is the staff otherwise i would of changed salons straght away!
Has anyone ventured out of Greenwich to Blackheath for hairdressers- or can we not talk about that?
By all means. I use Greenwich as a base - but like to co-opt anything local if it's lovely and interesting. Having said that, I haven't been to any in Blackheath. Do you have a recommendation?
I strongly disagree with all of the bad comments about the Greenwich Clipper. Being a male walking into that place is fantastic (the girls are gorgeous) and I get a decent haircut. My girlfreind also uses the salon and fair enough she has had the cold water treatment but I am assuming they get very busy and it is just like my water at home.
I used to only go to barbers but for a little extra you get a stunner cutting your hair, Kelly is great.
I dont suppose any of the girls that have posted comments on here are jealous are you?
go to richard at the greenwich clipper, hes brilliant at cutting it however you want. disagree with all the comments except it is a bit pricey.
Do yourself a big favour, DO NOT go to the greenwich clipper. The staff have no customer service skills, they must have been dragged up!! They never have any hot water and do not apologise about it. Its filty,no one takes pride in thier surroundings. The boss i found to be pushy, rude and with bad attitude. They oviously do not wash the towels as they stink. Don't ask for a drink the cup must never have been washed from the day they were bought. The price structure is ridiculous, how much is a bloody hair cut. A place that gives that many discounts is not a place worth going to in my eyes!! I would suggest that health and safety pay a visit, bet they'd be shut down! They should be!!!!
Are you talking about greenwich clipper in greenwich? Because i have been going there for years and everytime i go there i have a really good laugh with the girls and have nothing but exellent service from them and on a few occasions that i have arrived late they have always accommedated me. I do agree that the place could be brightened up a bit but on the whole i think they do a fab job.
Hi. I've only recently moved to Greenwich and used Greenwich Clipper recently. I was dealt with by a guy called Keith and can only say i was treated fabulously and professionally, a world away from the Salons where I used to live (the South West). I can honestly say I would have no hesitation in using Greenwich Clipper.
i have been goin 2 Go West at the blackheath standard for many years now and i always enjoy my time there everybody is very helpfull and polite they are very child friendly and all welcome new regular young and old customers i strongly recommend it as it is fabulous and i feel like a new woman everytime i leave all staff are polite and friendly and it is the best service you will ever recieve .So if you have a hair dilema Go West is the best for it.
GO WEST IS GREAT. Been going there for some time now and have no intention of going elsewhere. Friendly staff; clean salon; reasonable prices - what more can you ask for??????
Give them a try.

Just came out of Bavardez as recommended by this site and what a fantastic place it is!! £28 for a hec of a great cut and blowdry, fantastic team in there, relaxing environment, clean, great coffee and magazines. Totally go!! its my only choice now!!
greenwich clipper is the worst haircut I've ever had, after being treated to the freezing cold water wash.
If I hadn't been so timid I would have gotten up halfway through and left without paying.
I've been to Sweeney's once - a really good haircut as to be expected for the money. Possibly not as hip as I'd want, and when calling to ask about colours the young girl laughed nervously when I mentioned blue.
But really good haircuts.
I cound't ghet an appointment the day I needed one at Greenwich Clipper, so on the advice of everyone here I went to Bavardez, and blimey, do I wish I hadn't. I've got an appointment back at Greenwich clipper to have the mess they made put right. I asked for long layers, I got no layers. Well, that's not strinctly true, there does seem to be a 1cm difference between the shortest layer and the longest, so really, I have a skewiff block cut. My hair is thick and curly, so you can imagine the terribleness of this. I asked for a trim of my side fringe, which she refused, yes that's right, refused, to do for me, saying it wouldn't fall right - it was 6 weeks worth of grown out and it 'fell right' before. The products used made my heair feel heavy and greasy and had to wash it as soon as I got in. It may be cheaper than Greenwich Clipper, but, in this case, cheap means cheap, not value.
I just went to Greenwich Clipper yesterday, hoping that my messy looking hair with leftover highlights would be taken care of and what a shock! It looks better than it has for a long time.the cut is awesome and they toned the color so it just ROCKS. and i am a guy, mind you!
service was good, nothing to complain about really except that i had to wait for 40 minutes to actually get the haircut eventhough I had an appointment. Andrew was really good, i will go there again!
Bavardez was great, I went there at the weekend and was really impressed. My hair was done by Annie who was really friendly and very keen to get my hair done exactly the way I wanted it. I have quite long and thick hair which usually costs loads because of the amount of dye used - but this only cost me £55 which was really impressive. I had been to Ediz to have it done before and whilst they did a good job, the hairdresser was quite cold and unfriendly and the price was pretty astronomical. I would definitely recommend Bavardez to someone looking for a decent place in Greenwich.
I've had my hair cut at Tornado's which is near somerfield. They're always pretty busy, listen rather than dictate and give a relaxing massage when your hair is washed.
The comment about Greenwich Clipper is so true.
They are such a rip-off, I was told that I can get a haricut for 25 % less and finally when I booked an appointment, they charged me 55 GBP ( normal price being 44) just because the lady who cut my hair was apparently a senior stylist.
they didnt tell me this before the hair cut though.
I will avoid them.
Avoid the Greenwich Clipper - I had an awful "up" do there once, the worst I've ever had. Also on both occassions that I've been there there has been no hot water.
I've been going to Greenwich Clipper for 3 years and never had bad service or a bad cut. Keith, one of the owners, is friendly, polite and listens. And they make a great cuppa.
Some of the bad comments on here do sound suspicious to me...
I had an appointment at Ego on Trafalgar road last week.
Was seen by a lovely girl called Yvette, gave me the best cut of my life!
All the staff in there were friendly too.
Well recommended. John
