The Co-Op

Trafalgar Rd

I am proud of the Co-op - the little 'ave a go Joe that fancies its chances enough to meet the Tesco Goliath head-on in the Battle of Trafalgar Road.

It's stolen one March (fnarr fnarr) in that it's managed to close, refurb and re-open in a matter of a couple of weeks while the lumbering retail monolith still thrashes around removing original Edwardian shop fittings and digging foundations down to Australia.

Which is why I am truly sad to report that that's just about the only thing that the Co-op has managed to do.

As you approach, it's naturally the shop front that strikes first. What is it that makes supermarkets install giant plate glass windows then cover them in sticky-back plastic with close-up pictures of cabbages glistening with 'morning dew?' It's not just the Co-op that does it - they all do - but don't they realise that punters might actually prefer to have a couple fewer choices of penny wafer brands in return for a few rays of natural sunlight?

I am not going to say anything about the shop signs save that I'm assuming they're temporary.

I have to admit that the Co-op is better now than it was. Tragically that's not really saying much. My overall memory of the old store is a tatty display of cheap women's mags falling out of the shelves as you walked in, followed by half-empty tatty displays of sad-looking veg and baskets of 2-for-1 bakewell tarts with orange stickers. Later on there was a tatty, half-empty display of yogurts with orange stickers and more bargain bins. When you'd finally made your choice, you'd either queue up at one of two tills which might or might not be open or stand in line at the cig counter.

As I walked in yesterday, the display of cheap women's mags had expanded to a few more titles and was in shelves that looked like they might keep them a bit neater. The veg seemed slightly more various, but was already running out and looking hap-hazard. As I moved further into the store the fridges were new - but once again the products looked thin on the ground. The one thing they do seem to have bought in bulk are the ubiquitous orange stickers.

The tatty bargain bins remain. The gloomy lighting remains. And, even though they had the opportunity to change it, the ridiculous checkout system remains. They've admitted that the stand-alone checkout counters were never open and done away with them, but all they've replaced it with are several people at a long counter-like till with individual queues, rather than one queue feeding into all. It was only about 9.30 and people were already grumpy, complaining that 'their' queue was moving more slowly than anyone else's.

Really - M&S manage to make these places look cool. The Co-op looks not much different to before. What staggers me is that they've obviously spent money on this - but have failed to do basic things like working out the queuing system. The not-very-encouraging counter to this is that Tescos probably won't look much better.

I'm sad. I like the Co-op's principles and would always prefer it to the might of the Tesco Titan. It's made a few small forays - I liked the little display of essential DIY bits and bobs, for example, but though I might be wrong I seriously doubt the ability of this refit to stand up to the might of the Tesco Juggernaut.

It sounds as depressing as my local, Somerfield. Which I try to avoid if possible. Queues which seem to go on forever. The most depressing shopping experience ever. A shop in need of a urgent makeover and quick! Haven't used the Co-op but sounds very similar to Somerfield.

I'm assuming you don't mean the Somerfield at The Blackheath Standard? In the remotest possibility that you do I have good news - as from next Tues 13th, it will reopen as M&S

But I'm sure you can't mean that one. Poor you. Hopefully M&S will come and take you out of your misery soon.

God I hate Co-Op. It really wrecks my shopping experience and I always come back from there in a bad mood because of the bare shelves and awful customer service. Glad to see it hasn't improved any!

The Somerfield in Greenwich is also crap, they have decided to fill half of the tiny store with a baked goods and huge booze section, whilst there are literally four shelves of everything else. And is there really any need for an entire aisle dedicated to crisps?

I'm really sad about the Co-op. I really wanted it to have a chance against Tescos. As supermarkets go its ethics don't suck and I truly hoped it would have a chance.

It IS better than it was. But it's still not found its way out of some fundamental problems, IMHO and I have grave fears for it.

At least it should do ok in the (very) short term as the only place I find MORE depressing is th Iceland next door.

Hate to sound like a sell out, but I am really looking forward to Tesco arriving. If the alternatives are Co-op and Iceland (shudder), I am not adverse to a bit of commercialism. It is a shame that Co-op go to such a big effort to adhere to their Fair Trade values but make no effort on staff training or basic stock ordering!

You've got me there. Something is rotten in the state of Co-op and all we can do is wait and watch.

And of course I'll be testing out the new Tescos - I'm not THAT much of a luddite. After all - it's service we're lacking down Trafalgar Road and anything that wwill up the ante is good for me.

BTW have you noticed that yet another of thsoe empty shops is being done up? The dodgy record shop seems to be having a makeover and another store a few doors up is installing some rather natty glass doors. Please don't tell me it's another Estate Agent...

Where is the new Tesco going to be?

If my spooky spies' information is correct, it will be about 100metres up teh road from the Co-op on Trafalgar Road in the three shops which used to be the fireplace shop/empty/the double galzing shop. There is a lot of building work going on there behind closed shutters, though I did see it earlier removing some rather lovely Victorian/Edwardian fittings from the empty shop :0(

I had not been to the Co-Op for a couple of weeks and to be honest I didnt even realise they had "done it up" until I got to the checkout. The queue was snaking around the store, peeling off whenever a new till became free (so I guess the customers have abandoned the idea of seperate queues). Same old unhelpful staff though, so nothing changed there.

I don't think they're going to cut it when the new Tescos arrives, are they...

What I don't get is that somebody actually shelled out cash here. Why didn't they take a moment to wonder what their customers might like?

You clearly don't remember the days when it was called Lo-Cost, then! ;-)

Not quite the Co-Op, but the lovely fruit and veg stall outside - closed today after very many years of sterling service. They have been there in the rain, snow and gales, happily selling you one apple if that is what you want. The vicar from Christchurch came over and gave a lovely speech, someone had baked a cake and I promise there was not a dry eye in the house.

Damn! I KNEW there was something I was supposed to be doing today. I doubt they read this blog - but if they do I wish them every happiness in retirement - they will be sorely missed. I'd have cried too if I'd been there...

It's a really weird job they've done to the Co-op - it's smaller, there's less of lots of things (and the bread is terrible now but there's loads of new ice lollies, ale and indian food ingredients.

I didn't know about the Tesco. I'll still use the Co-op considering I live across the road from it but I guess it'll be good to have the choice at times. Sainsburys/ASDA are that bit too far away from me for an easy shop.

It was a terrible shame about the veg stall. The place has lost a real piece of its character.

I really can't work out what they were thinking. They've clearly spent money on it, and managed to make it worse. The shopping trolleys congregated round the door make it difficult to even enter the place and the dreadful Radio Co-op makes it SOUND cheap. I just don't get it.

Yes a tragedy about the Veg stall, but at least La Salumeria is still going strong - don't you just adore those Easter Eggs they have adorning every inch of the shop just now? Such a breath of Spring.
