Blockbuster

Trafalgar Rd

I know, I know. You weren't expecting me to like this, were you...

Blockbuster is hardly the Home of Alternative Cinema. The selection of anything that isn't, well - blockbusters - is extremely limited and frankly, given the size of the store, the selection of anything at all isn't wild, with far too much space given over to cheap retail DVDs and computer games for my personal taste. My own choice would be a small independent that stocked a wide range of Hollywood Action, European Art and Japanese Manga along with everything in between.

But - and it's a big but - given that we have a chain, the next best thing to an indie store is personal service of the kind you get here.

Greenwich Blockbuster has some really knowledgeable, helpful and friendly staff who will take as much time as you need to find something they think you'll like, whilst also wryly acknowledging the limited range. They'll talk to you about the sort of thing you like and recommend stuff they think you'll enjoy. They're not always spot-on - but they try - and then remember to ask if you enjoyed what you borrowed. They have even been known to advise me not to take one DVD because they thought it really was tosh and another title because it would be on special offer the following week.

To be singled out in particular is the big guy who works there - if he's not in the store you might find him lurking outside with a sneaky fag. He goes to inordinate lengths to help. The two young guys who seem to be there when the big chap isn't are also very friendly.

Obviously, you're going to get the best service if you don't go in at 7.00pm on a Friday night - but I have never known these guys to be anything other than helpful.

So. A chain I like. Though if these guys were to strike out on their own and start a really good DVD rental shop I'd be there like a shot. Not that I'm hinting or anything.

BTW has anyone tried those mail-order rental firms? I can't ever see myself organised enough to think that a) I'll want to watch a DVD in two day's time and b) I'll know what movie I'll be in the mood for. Are other people like that too?

Ok. Just me then...

I'm so with you on this. What they stock is poor, but the guys more than make up for it (they've never recommended a film to me that I haven't liked). They are spot on. They are the reason I keep going back.

I have been with Love Film for 3years and they are ok, I'm lazy and the no late fees work for me as I can watch a dvd anyday of the week or over two nights, sometimes I even get to watch the extras as I can keep it for as long is I like. I don't actually recommend LoveFilm as I sacked them two years ago for terrible service and move to someone else but they were taken over recently without a word I just started getting films sent from LF again. It seems that LF have taken over a lot of the smaller companies and there isn't that many to chose from now. Service is better these day so I may stay. However, you need to follow some rules with the postal service. I have over 350 film on my waiting list, seems alot but it's on a first come first served basis, so you tick new and old ones you fancy and you're put on a waiting list, if its a popular title you can wait months and months even if it's number one on your own priority list. This is why I also have a blockbuster account, so I can see new films straight away. With LF I have no control over what I will get this week and I like that, you can always send it back if you don't fancy it and put it back on your list for another time, it also has every film thats on dvd, if they don't stock it,it isn't available anywhere and I love my obscure foreign films which make this perfect for me. Oooh nearly forgot as MAC user it's useless to me but you can also get film downloads from LV to your PC for the very popular stuff so no need to wait at all for most people I guess. It's worth checking out for any film fans.. there's a free trial.

So. let me get this right - you pick stuff and they send you something from your list at random?

Not sure that's my cup of tea. I have rather odd personal views about when I want to see stuff. Think I'll stick to The Picturehouse and Blockbuster...

Completely at random I'm afraid unless you can use the download facility.

I was with Love Film for a while but they were truly terrible, never ever sending me anything from anywhere near the top of my list so I gave up. Ok, so I put all these worthy intellectual films on my list but I didn't actually mean I WANTED to see them. I wanted Anchorman and after three months of waiting I gave up. So I moved to Mymoviestream.com who were much better. I got Anchorman (truly awful) but gave up again soon after as I just don't like the concept of not being able to watch what I want to watch now. I guess I'll wait for proper downloads... In the meantime the rental library next to Somerfiled is OK, if a little smokey.

We're trying out the rental at Amazon, merely because its site said it had a film we wanted to see which neither it nor Play actually sell. It was lying of course. When we signed up it admitted it would be a "very long wait." (ie. they ain't got it...)

Just recently Essential Music in Greenwich Market has become ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT for DVD deals, with the kind of classic non-mainstream titles you`d expect from those characters.Apparently they are closing August at latest. Damn shame, absolutely brilliant shop[and cheap!]and been there for donkeys. Apparently it`s the ordering of PHYSICAL product [rather than downloads per se]from the web which finally threatens Essential with oblivion.

I'm gutted about it - they've been threatening to close for so long that I began to wonder if it would ever happen - I confess I always rather hoped it was a bluff. I will miss them like crazy. In the meanwhile, I will be bagging a few bargains...

Agree with you about how helpful the big guy is... but don't be in an opposing team to his on pub quiz night at The Vanbrugh - he's a real expert there too!
