Dead Supermarkets

Has it occurred to anyone else that we're going to have an interesting time very soon?

Ex-Somerfields is closed pending M&S at the Standard.
Tescos in Trafalgar Road isn't nearly ready to open yet
The Co-op is just about to close pending a refurb to meet Tescos head-on (hoorah)

Now. Whatever we think about the clashing of tusks that these great monolyths are going to do, and whatever we think about supermarkets in general, it's going to be very interesting when the Co-op closes and we have no supermarkets at all for a while, isn't it.

I wonder what will happen...

I wondered the same thing today, and wandered into Iceland. It was heaving and the shelves were bare. I guess that's the answer. Just one more reason we love Ocado.

Yes - it's very definitely shut now -open again on the 6th. You'd have thought Iceland would have foreseen the opportunity. To be honest I always forget Iceland - the ugliest building in Trafalgar Rd (look up - you'll see what I mean.)

Maybe they'll get the message by the time the Co-op opens again...

To be honest, Sainsbury's on the peninsula isn't that far away, once you get used to the idea of running the gauntlet of the Caletock/Flamstead Estate. Not one to do at night, though.

The 129 bus is dead handy for getting to Sainsbury's from the rest of Greenwich.

Or we could just try to use small independent shops for a bit. I was disappointed that the fruit and veg stalls normally next to the Co-Op weren't there yesterday.

I noticed that too. I was all set up to do my vegetable shop and the stalls weren't there - the one day they really could have cleaned up!

I KNOW that Sainsburys is there - but it would be fun to try living the non-supermarket life for a while. I noticed that Salumeria seemed a bit understocked too - maybe they'd been enjoying the extra custom.

Did you not know that the darling couple that run the fruit and veg stall are retiring in two weeks? Good for them as the gentlemen has been running that stall for 40years and his wife only a couple of years behind him. She ask me not to make her feel guilty when I disgrace myself and begged her not to leave, so I'm very glad for them but miserable for me as I hate buying my lemon, oranges etc in plastic bags from a supermarket, at least one has rotted by the time I've unpack at home. There was apparently only one young chap who was interested in taking over but he thought it would make him money and I guess it's a basic living at best, which makes me love them all the more! Anyway appreciate them while they're still there as it's another part of East Greenwich gone forever.

Noooooooo! I LOVE those two! What will we do without them?

They always got really good fruit and veg and never minded if I just wanted one apple or banana to eat on the spot.

Good luck to them retiring, of course. But OH NO!

We DESPERATELY need a greengrocers now, then.

They will be sorely missed. Where would the best site for a greengrocers in the area be? I vote for one of the shops in the block opposite the Arches, to complement the fishmonger and Theatre of Wine. What shall we get rid of? The kebab shop? The dodgy-looking employment agency? Or the "convenience store" which doesn't appear to have anything in it? That will surely die once Tesco appears.

Or maybe just a few doors down so that we can have a few less essential but equally lovely shops in the in-fill?

The kebab shop on Trafalgar Road is probably busier than Theatre Of Wine & the Fishmongers combined. It won't be going anywhere.

As for Charlies, the worlds best corner shop; how can you say he has nothing on the shelves when only a few weeks ago he was selling one lone Robosapien toy?

Another "Dead Shop" to add to the list is "Shamrocks" sandwich shop which shut down yesterday, Jay is happy to sell on the lease...... might be a bit small for a greengrocers though.

Lord help us! That make THIRTY FOUR!!!

Might make a decent green grocers - after all the Creaky Shed is minute - but frankly we're not stuck for premises...

What a shame.

What is going on?

Might not be 34 as I walked down yesterday and noticed one or two new places - surely you haven't missed the shoe shop/hair salon? I can't get my head around that combo. At least they could have named it Top to Tails or something.

Is Jane Lee ever going to finish refurbishment or is it all lies?

How much does rent go for one of these places anyway?

Also, how could the new charity shop on the corner already need a refurb? That's a really nice big space for something decent...

No - I had counted the hair salon/shoe shop combination, mainly because I was also considering a run down of the myriad hairdressers/barbers/beauty parlours down these two particular roads and I was trying to decide whether to count it or not. I gave up on the hairdresser idea because they were just too hard to count.

Of course it may not be 34 because as I say, I found it very difficult to tell whether some shops were actually alive or not and where their boundaries are, but the hair/shoe shop is definitely in there.

Jane Lee - no idea - it's just been dormant for months. At least it's not an eyesore.

Charity shop - well, it's being refrubed but whether it's for the hospice or for another shop - who can tell?

Rents - no idea - but they can't be high with all the competition...

The Hospice charity shop will re-open soon, this will complete a very useful "Charity Triangle"! It was decided that the much needed refit could wait until the new year so they could get a couple of month trading in before Christmas. One down...... 34 to go??

Ah - so a charity shop, eh? Ok, I'll buy that. What I alwasy wonder though is how much stuff they have to sell in the shop to pay for the refit before any money actually goes to the real recipients.

Still - I'm not complaining - if another shop looks smart, that's fine by me.

Any word on the Polish deli? It looks like it's about to open, or has it opened already?

Polish Deli? My backside. It just looks like another bloomin' sandwich bar. Pah. Not that I won't test it out, when the time comes, of course...

It is a Polish deli. There is also a sandwich shop element but is also a deli; they have advertisements up about it and I even saw a flyer for the deli on Maze Hill station.

Isn't today the big reopening of Co-Op? (could be tomorrow). I dread to think what it will be like, it couldn't get any worse that's for sure. But they really needed to get rid of their completely inept staff before they needed a refurb!

I'm not sure - I thought it was going to be Monday but when I went past it was very dead which meant I had to shop at the bog-awful Iceland again. I can't get there today, but maybe someone could let me know.

I went up to the Standard yesterday - the new M&S is finished and very smart it looks too. No food yet but the grand opening is next Tuesday.

Don't turn up too early on Tuesday as the new M&S doesn't open until 10 o/c. Still concerned on what the impact will be on the other shops in Old Dover Road given that the Council wants to increase their rents by an exorbitant amount.

at this stage we can only watch and see. And make sure that we only use M&S for the stuff we can't buy at GG Sparkes, Hirst &Son etc...
