Olivers

You could very easily miss Oliver's. Tucked away downstairs in a mews opposite the Greenwich Theatre, the entrance looks like the back door to some dodgy dive - and in some respects Olivers is exactly that.

From the faded grandeur of the furniture to the swirling cast iron balcony steps, from the seedy-looking bandstand surrounded by mouldering instruments to the tiny bar itself, Oliver's oozes a louche sexuality so missing in most bars today. Imagine a seedy Weimar Berlin nightclub, add some jazz (there is live music several nights a week - basically whenever its enjoyably eccentric and extremely Gallic owner Olivier decides he fancies some jazz,) light a Gauloise and enjoy the atmosphere. A fabulous, intimate venue, though the piano isn't tuned often enough...

Olivers is the people-watching pinnacle of Greenwich, at least since the obscene ballooning of Bar Du Musee. Who can solve the mysterious eclecticism of the seated clientele on jazz or acoustic nights? My theory is it`s a massive digitally-sourced DATE...possibly an accumulation of `handmade` [£150] introductions thrown together in table lots. They must have put the words `dinner` and `jazz` in their profiles. Aah, wallflowers and eternal singletons. Olivers has the best bunch of barflies in Greenwich [not to mention those who work there]. The decor is a marvel...the mirrors! I once had a plan to approach Oliver with a view to putting on a swing/jive/burlesque night but Greenwich is full of jaded 30-somethings who don`t actually like either music or dancing - they`d rather stay in and read a cookbook.

I'd go.

I suspect burlesque is teetering on the brink of seediness after its brief rennaissance, but while it's around, we should embrace it.

Jazz, properly advertised, should work - we used to have jazz in many different venues(before the rampant invasion of Greenwich Inc who stamped it out) Olivier does have jazz, but he forgets to tell anyone about it.

Nice one Phantom. Good to see some support for the last proper music venue in town... Folk can find out who'll be gracing the stage every Tuesday at Oliver's by visiting www.myspace.com/thetwistacoustic

Help! Is there anyway of knowing what's on at Olivers? Is there a website? I keep calling the number I've found on the internet but no answer! Thanks for your help.

The wonderful/frustrating thing (depending on your point of view) about Olivers is that it really is quite hit and miss - music goes on pretty much when Olivier the owner decides to have some. There is a website -ish -
www.myspace.com/oliversmusicbar but it's not really kept up to date as far as I can see.

However, Tuesday nights are taken care of elsewhere and you can see that here www.myspace.com/thetwistacoustic

Good luck - and keep persevering - it's a great venue.

Thanks for your answer. I think twistacoustic finished in September though...
Is Olivers open even when there's no music? Are there any opening hours?
Thanks again!

Olivers is most definitely open when there is no music. I don't know about opening hours, but I'm assuming the same as any other bar.

Oliver's is the best place in Greenwich and one of the few drinkeries not owned by Inc...

For the Wed night jazz nights, see www.myspace.com/thejamatolivers
There is a main set first featuring some of the UK's finest jazzers and then a jam to follow.

Was wondering if you have to buy tickets for the Tuesday Jam in advance or can you buy on the door?

You can just turn up on the night of the jam - and all other music nights and pay at the door.
Visit www.myspace.com/oliversmusicbar for all listings
