The Coach and Horses

A splendid little pub on the South-west corner of the Market, the Coach and Horses has a traditional white-rendered exterior with old fashioned lanterns, and a comfy modern interior which manages to be both cosy and minimal at the same time. The drink's a bit on the pricey side - but I guess that's just London for you. The pub menu is consistently yummy, interesting and just that little bit different - though it rarely seems to change much in itself. It gets hideously overcrowded on market days when it's hard to find anywhere to sit either inside or on the benches spilling onto the marketplace, but at other times its much less hectic and the service is understandably less frenzied.

A great place to catch a drink on a Sunday evening before heading over to the amazing Sunday Special at Up the Creek.

Such a shame that after holding out for over a year of pressure it finally surrendered and completed Frank Inc's takeover of the pubs in the market. That glass fence they've erected around the outdoor area can't help but make me think I'm sitting in a shopping mall food court...

I know what you mean. I haven't eaten there since - what's the food like?

Hi,
No, not eaten there recently.

By the way, your RSS feed doesn't seem to work on the new blog.

Thanks - I'm working on it. There are several teething troubles I've found - not least of which was the two systems not agreeing on what was a dash and what was a question mark ...

I'll let the webmaster know. Thanks for telling me.

I didn't realise the Inc takeover was so recent - I hope that is not an ominous sign. I must admit I don't like the new glass panels as it makes it a lot harder to get into with a buggy or loads of bags but I suppose that was the reason for it in the first place. I've not eaten there for a while but as long as they keep serving Timothy Taylor's Landlord I will be happy enough.

Hmm. I suspect that THEY don't want eas of access, but I wonder whether they are theoretically allowed to do that - do they own that piece of land outside - or are they ilegally obstructing traffic, I wonder ...

And they look awful too. Although not as tacky as the new window stickers in George. I thought it actually used to look quite classy! Oh well, I'm sure its very useful to list all of the things you sell in a horrible font in the window, that will help.

I'm surprised there are enough items in that particular shop to list. Every time I go past the stock is downand the number of barstools have gone up.

Not quite sure where to post this comment but on the livejournal site we had some discussion about the upcoming Greenwich GBK. Well, I finally went to their Soho branch tonight and...oh dear... come back pie shop!

I see what you mean about not knowing where to put this. When I transferred all the old posts across I really didn't think there was much point in bringing the Goddards section through - it would just get people's hopes up.

The GBK food wasn't awful when we went to th Kingston branch - just very average and with over-inflated prices. They didn't do much in the way of veggie alternatives either which in this day and age is really not a great idea for business. There are a lot of 'em out there.

By the way you still have two options, Goddards-wise - and I will be writing about them soon. They are continuing online for delivery - but until I've tried it out I'm reluctant to get too excited about that - and, of course, their even older "sister" shop is still open in Deptford.

I'll cover it all in more depth soon.

Hmm, I'm not too sure about mail order pipes but I'll wait for your review! GBK wasn't awful, just not what I expected. As I think I posted on the old site, I was actually quite excited about it. I really love the two Hamburger Union's in the centre and was hoping GBK would be as good. Sadly, from my solitary experience, this is not the case. I still think it will be a useful addition to the town centre (and as I said in the past I never used the pie shop as it was always too busy or shut!) but it's a shame it wasn't quite what I expected.

Having said all that I am very close to Deptford so will take a look at Goddards down there. Thanks for the info.

All I can say is that it's not going to be a Greenwich Inc joint - which means we'll at least have SOME variety.

I'm not sure about mail order pies either (or pipes...;0) ) which is why I'm holding back for the moment. I did wonder if it was more a catering-type thing than an individual service. I can't remember what the pie shop in Deptford is called - whether it's actually called Goddards or not. You need to turn left out of the station and carry on for about 25metres if memory serves.
